Start as we mean to go on..........
Friendly match at Baldonnell, 10/8/06
St Francis 1, Terenure College 1
Nure's Premier 1 Sunday team got their 2006-7 preparations properly off the ground tonight with a fully deserved 1-1 draw on a wet and slippery night in Baldonnell.
While the pre-season training has gone well, nothing tells more about a team's state than a proper match and the 15 players who all got decent minutes can be well pleased with their night's work.
St Francis had plenty of possession early on as their superior sharpness having already played 2 games clearly showed but the Nure defensive 3 of Dec Brady, Mark Hanlon and new signing John Fisher protected the returning Alex Wilson quite comfortably.
Kaz Drennan fired over from 25 yards after good Nure approach from their first real attack and after 20 minutes Nure took the lead slightly against the run of play. Stevie Jordan drove in a very well placed free kick from the right and Martin Blair directed it goalwards; the Francis keeper parried but the Scotsman Blair scored on the rebound with his left peg. That goal visibly lifted the visitors as Jordan, Drennan and Robin Jones began to really boss the midfield sector. Blair was denied by the Francis keeper after a terrific move involving O'Frighil and Jones and from the corner, the keeper saved again, this time from Gary Smith's fine effort and a terrific run from Jones might've led to a penalty, but Jones' honesty in staying on his feet cost him as he was clearly caught.
Francis finished the half strongly though and equalised after 39 minutes; A corner led to a free header and though Wilson made a reflex stop, the rebound was bundled home by the Francis player for a soft enough goal. A final minute corner from Francis almost led to a 2nd, but the header just cleared the bar.
Nure began the 2nd half extremely well and should have taken the lead when Jones sent Blair away in the right channel and Blair's cross was met by Rafter who somehow couldn't put the header away and Jones in support just couldn't snap up the breaking ball.
Another excellent move involving another new signing Tom McLoughlin, saw his terrific pass set up O'Frighil whose backheel freed Rafter but the keeper saved well to his right.
Francis again finished strongly but Nure's resolve and commitment and honesty kept them very much in the game, but it took a terrific 85th minute save by Wilson low to his right to prevent Francis scoring after Smith had given away a free. With the last kick, Wilson again showed confident handling from another dangerous free kick and the game finished with the right result, a 1-1 draw.
TCAFC (3-5-2): Wilson; D.Brady, Hanlon, Fisher; O'Frighil, Drennan, Jordan, Jones, Murray; Smith, Blair.
